Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

The switchboard takes the incoming supply and splits it safely across your home, and it is where the safety devices that protect you live. Boards in older Hunter homes were built for a different era of electrical load, long before EVs, ducted air-conditioning, induction cooktops and a power point behind every screen.

Warning signs worth acting on

• Ceramic or rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
• No safety switches (RCDs), or only one covering everything
• Breakers that trip regularly for no obvious reason
• Lights that flicker or dim when appliances kick in
• A warm switchboard, buzzing, or a burning smell
• A board so full there is no room to add a circuit

Why safety switches matter most

A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuits. A safety switch (RCD) protects you. It cuts power in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity leaking to earth, which is what happens when someone gets a shock.

Modern wiring rules require RCD protection on most circuits. Older homes often have none, or one shared RCD, which means a fault anywhere kills power everywhere and the protection is weaker. Splitting circuits across proper RCDs is a real, felt safety improvement.
