Your panels stay put, and a battery stores your daytime solar so you can use it at night instead of exporting it for next to nothing. What the job takes depends mainly on your inverter, and that’s the first thing we check.

There are two ways to add a battery to an existing system, and your current inverter decides which suits you. It must be compatible with the battery, so this is the part the assessment settles first.
If you have a hybrid (battery-ready) inverter, a battery can often be added directly. A hybrid inverter manages both your panels and battery from the one unit. This is DC coupling, usually the simplest, most cost-effective retrofit because the hardware to charge and manage a battery is already built in.
If you have a standard, solar-only inverter, you have two options: add an AC coupled battery with its own inverter that works alongside your existing setup, or replace your string inverter with a modern hybrid. A string inverter more than about five to seven years old may be near the end of its life anyway, which can tip the decision toward an upgrade. We weigh that up off your actual equipment, not whatever’s on special that month.

DC coupled systems connect to the DC side of your solar through a hybrid inverter, and typically run at slightly higher efficiency because the power is stored without extra conversion. AC coupled batteries connect through their own inverter to your home’s AC system, which is why they’re usually the simpler way to add storage without replacing what you have.
